MARFORCOM Chief of Staff Speaks About Montford Point Marines at MLK Day Celebration

The Congressional Gold Medal awarded posthumously to U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Willie E. King stands on display at the City of Norfolk Martin Luther King Jr. Day Ceremony, held at Attucks Theater, Norfolk, Virginia, January 15, 2024. During the ceremony, Cpl. King was recognized as among the first African American recruits to join the Marine Corps and train at the segregated Camp Montford Point, North Carolina. The National Montford Point Marine Association –the organization that arranges and facilitates awarding the Congressional Gold Medal for this honor is dedicated to preserving the legacy of nearly 20,000 World War II Marine Corps veterans who served from 1942 – 1949 and trained in the aforementioned segregated training facility.
