The Rocky Mountain Region Society of American Military Engineers and US Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District recently welcomed 1st Space Brigade Commander Col. Mark Cobos as the keynote speaker at its 2024 Industry Day conference on Jan. 23.

Cobos, who commanded a Sapper - or combat engineer - company in the 3rd Infantry Division and led Sapper platoons in the 10th Mountain Division before becoming a space officer in 2008, briefed representatives from more than 150 contracting, engineering and defense-related companies on the structure and mission of the Army’s only space brigade. He emphasized how opportunities to invest in national security imperatives in the space domain are “at an absolutely all-time high.”

Just as the nation started to become “completely dependent” on space in the global economy and technology sectors more than a decade ago, Cobos said, senior leaders recognized how the American way of warfare would rely on a superior ability to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance from space to protect Soldiers on the ground.

As Army space operations continue to advance in response to growing threats from China, Russia, Iran and sub-state terrorist organizations, he said, the 1st Space Brigade is leading efforts to integrate joint, coalition and commercial space capabilities.

“It’s an absolute race to get ahead of our adversaries and have the ability to better understand and visualize and describe the problem sets and the operating environments in which we fight,” Cobos said. “There is no limit to the creativity that we will use to incorporate the lessons (engineers) learn into what we do as warfighters.”
