Sgt. Cornelius Charlton, from East Gulf, W. Va., enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and after basic training, was sent to Germany. After renlisting Charlton was sent to Maryland and then to Japan before arriving in Korea in 1950. While serving with Company E, 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, during the Korean Conflict, Charlton's unit came under mortar fire. He charged and took out multiple mortars until he was mortally wounded by grenade fragments. Charlton died in Korea June 24, 1951 and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.
