U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Eric Austin, center, the commanding general of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, speaks to U.S. Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and U.S. Navy Sailors assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) during a visit to the USS America in the Philippine Sea, Feb. 13, 2024. Austin oversaw the training and welfare of the Marines from 1st MAW attached to the 31st MEU. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the America Amphibious Ready Group in the 7th Fleet area of operations, the U.S. Navy’s largest forward-deployed numbered fleet, and routinely interacts and operates with allies and partners in preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
