U.S. Navy Cmdr. William “Carney” Bowen, test pilot, lands an F-35C Lightning II fighter aircraft at the Runway Arrested Landing Site (RALS), Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division-Lakehurst (NAWCAD-LKE), N.J., Feb. 27, 2024. RALS is a shipboard-representative test site. The pilot and a team from the Patuxent River F-35 Integrated Test Force (PAX ITF), assigned to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., worked with the Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) Test Team at NAWCAD–LKE to conduct the flight testing of AAG, a modular, integrated system consisting of energy absorbers, power conditioning equipment and digital controls, designed as the follow-on to the Mark-7 (Mk-7) arresting gear. The NAWCAD-LKE mission includes to design, develop, test, acquire, and field capabilities for the Navy and Marine Corps team to safely launch and recover every Naval Aviation platform. The Pax River ITF’s mission is to effectively plan, coordinate, and conduct safe, secure, and efficient flight test for F-35B and C variants, and provide necessary and timely data to support program verification/certification and fleet operational requirements.
