The Navy Supply Corps School celebrated the start of Women’s History Month with a very special event focused on how to navigate the challenges that are faced by women in the Navy. The star-studded panel answered questions about topics ranging from family planning and being a strong leader to how to respond when others are acting less than respectful.
“You can be successful as a leader and as a parent,” said CWO3 Raechel N. Pope, from the LDO/CWO Academy. She encouraged everyone – men and women – to be open with their chain of command about their goals and hopes for the future.
Naval Leadership and Ethics Center Executive Officer CAPT Jill D. Skeet (PICTURED) encouraged dating after marriage. “Date your spouse. Feed that relationship. You have to continue to pay into that relationship.”
“Don’t forget about your family,” reminded Navy Supply Corps School’s LSC Carla Palad.
Officer Training Command Newport Executive Officer CDR Nicole Scherer emphasized the need for strong leaders. “Be a better leader. Be a supportive leader to your Sailors,” she said.
And when you run across disrespect, Senior Enlisted Academy Deputy Directory CMC Veronica C. Holliday encouraged women – and men – to not tolerate that kind of talk.
“We each have a responsibility to stop these kinds of conversations,” she said.
Chaplain LCDR Susan M. Maginn said, “Challenge them. Do not feel like you have to work in an environment where you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. We have voices. We need to make them heard.”
“Come armed with facts. Don’t back down,” said NSCS Executive Officer Jennifer L. Charlton.
Fleet Master Chief (ret.) April D. Beldo shared some great parting advice: “1. Remember your Sailors 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. No matter where you are. And 2. Embrace the Sailor’s Creed. It is a way of life. If you’re not all in, then it’s time for you to do something else.”
