Actress and Union spy Pauline Cushman was one of the women researched by Army Reserve Lt. Col. Danni Leone, the site director of the Medical Readiness and Training Command's Regional Training Site-Medical, Camp Parks, Calif., for her 2019 master's thesis, "Women Who Wear the Breeches: The Representation of Female Civil War Soldiers in Mid-Nineteenth Century Newspapers." Leone said Cushman, who often wore a military uniform, was captured after Confederate women discovered incriminating documents in her gaiters. The spy was rescued by advancing Union forces before she could be executed. (Photo courtesy of the Library of Congress)
