FREDERICK, Md. (March 22, 2024) Andrea Luquette, a research associate, with Naval Medical Research Command’s (NMRC) Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD), loads DNA samples onto a nanopore sequencing instrument in preparation for sequencing of a bacterial genome. Data generated from such a run, assists NMRC scientists in characterizing disease-causing agents, tracking the spread of outbreaks and identification of potential resistances to medical countermeasures a target organism may possess. NMRC BDRD regularly performs sequencing in support of efforts such as surveillance and development of therapeutics to augment operational readiness and performance of joint force personnel. NMRC is engaged in a broad spectrum of activities, from basic science in the laboratory to field studies in austere and remote areas of the world to investigations in operational environments. In support of the Navy, Marine Corps, and joint U.S. warfighters, researchers study infectious diseases, biological warfare detection and defense, combat casualty care, environmental health concerns, aerospace and undersea medicine, medical modeling, simulation, operational mission support, epidemiology and behavioral sciences.
