240401-N-ML137-1035 ASAN, Guam (Apr. 1, 2024) - Cassandra Gaffney, wife of U.S. Navy Chief Cryptologic Technician (Technical) Michael Gaffney, made a cake to celebrate her husband's reenlistment and the 131st birthday of U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officers at JRM headquarters, Apr. 1. The cake is designed to look like a chief’s vessel, a wooden box made by a Sailor when they are selected to advance to the rank of chief petty officer. The rank of chief was established April 1, 1893 and is a symbol of pride across the Navy, as they are considered technical experts in their rate and are mentors for both junior Sailors and officers.
