Navy and Marine Corps Force Health Protection Command (NMCFHPC) celebrated the 131st birthday of U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officers at NMCFHPC headquarters, April 1. The rank of Chief was established April 1, 1893, and is a symbol of pride across the Navy. Chiefs are considered technical experts in their rate and are mentors for both junior Sailors and Officers. During the celebration, Command Master Chief Francesco Maccarelli and Chief Hospital Corpsman John Holscher cut the cake with a cutlass as a reminder that Chiefs are sea-warriors, committed to carrying arms so that America may live in peace. Tradition also negates the cake be cut by the eldest and youngest member of the Chief’s Mess. This serves as a reminder of those Chiefs of the past, the shoulders of whom the Chiefs of the present stand. It also considers the present and beyond to those Chiefs who are charged with leading the Navy into the future. (U.S. Navy photo by Jennifer Goulart)
