Tai Prohaska, 21st Theater Sustainment Command public affairs specialist and Gold Star mother, holds a framed picture of her son, Petty Officer 3rd Class Niko Venutti, during a Gold Star commemoration ceremony April 5, 2024, on Smith Barracks in Baumholder, Germany. The term “Gold Star” comes from the Service Flag, which included a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the U.S. armed forces during any period of war or hostilities. If that loved one died, the blue star was replaced by a gold star as a means of allowing members of the community to know the price the family paid in the cause of freedom.
