240323-N-HB354-2001 – GREAT LAKES, IL (March 23, 2024) – NAVFAC PWD Great Lakes High Voltage Shop, Lake Forest BSA Troop 46 Scouts and Highland Park Cub Scouts Pack 34 during the install of utility pole to attach the Osprey nesting platform to at Naval Station Great Lakes.
The Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Public Works Department (PWD) Great Lakes Environmental Division partnered with Max Reger, Lake Forest BSA Troop 46, to install a nesting platform for the state-threatened Osprey, build nesting shelters for the state-endangered Common tern, and complete a beach clean-up as part of his Eagle Scout Service Project. The NAVFAC PWD Great Lakes High Voltage Shop provided and installed a utility pole, attached the platform to the pole, and educated the scouts on the construction process. These projects help Naval Station Great Lakes to conserve, restore, and protect essential nesting and stopover habitat for a diversity of migratory bird species. Letters of Appreciation signed by the Installation Commanding Officer were presented to the scouts by the Installation Environmental Program Director during the volunteer event.
