Meet Basim Khaleel, a 28-year-old with a passion for sports and physical rehabilitation. Forced by ISIS to leave Qaraqosh, Ninewa Plains in 2014, he returned in 2017 to find his house looted. His aspirations to support his displaced community led him to establish a physiotherapy center in Mosul in 2023.
To help him overcome challenges in launching his center, Basim participated in two training programs facilitated by the Catholic Relief Services organization and local partner Iraqi Al-Amal Association. In the first training, he learned crucial life skills and honed his leadership abilities. "Addressing the needs of clients with specific disabilities requires not only expertise but also tolerance. I learned to navigate these challenges" Basim said. The second training focused on business planning, financial management, and marketing, which resulted in collaboration with local doctors.
USAID is committed to empowering young entrepreneurs such as Basim who are dedicated to serving their communities. For Basim, his business is an opportunity to help people regain their physical abilities.
