A typographic poster design of the article "Operation Tomodachi". The Japanese kanji placed in the center stands for this "tomo" and "dachi" meaning friend or friendship in Japanese. The following is taken from the article;
This document focuses on actions US Army Japan/I Corps (FWD) and its elements took in response to a natural disaster that began on 11 March 2011, at 1446 hours local time, when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake centered approximately 45 miles east of the Tohoku region in northeastern Japan and 20 miles below the Pacific Ocean floor, struck. The earthquake triggered a massive tsunami which brought waves up to 130 feet high in some coastal areas, pushed ocean water up to 6 miles inland from the normal coastline, and destroyed many of the coastal towns and local farming areas in the Tohoku region. The combination of the earthquake and the tsunami caused several nuclear incidents, including Level 7 meltdowns of three reactors at the Fukushima Daichi Nuclear Power Plant Complex and the leak of radiation into the atmosphere. In response, U.S. military forces began Operation TOMODACHI, which translates as ‘Operation Friends,' along with the JGSDF and other organizations.
