Naval Information Warfare Command (NIWC) Atlantic’s Assured Real-time Communications (ARC) Laboratory team hosted a familiarization visit from General Philippe Lavigne, Commander NATO Supreme Allied Command Transformation (SACT), several members of his staff, and other industry representatives May 7, 2024 in NIWC Atlantic's ARC 5G lab on Naval Station Norfolk
Kevin F. Thompson, NIWC Atlantic Senior Engineer and ARC Laboratory Director, led the tour and the associated brief of the lab's purpose and capabilities, which was also attended by NIWC Atlantic Executive Officer, Cmdr. Anthony Cagle and several other members of local leadership.
Naval Information Warfare Command (NIWC) Atlantic’s ARC Lab was originally established to create solutions for the Navy's Secure Voice Over Internet Protocol (SVOIP) interoperability issues. Expanding its scope to include Unified Communications (UC) and support for Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) to IP migration. The ARC Lab evolved to become a Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) test center charged with certifying multi-vendor components for addition to the Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) Department of Defense Information Networks (DoDIN) Approved Products List (APL) for network solutions.
The ARC Lab’s ever-expanding technical capabilities and its interoperability and cybersecurity certification process familiarity make it ideal for testing, optimizations, and interoperability certification of emergent 5G communication technologies, including software-defined networks and cloud migration. The ARC Lab maintains partnerships with industry to facilitate rapid prototyping, acquisition, and sustainment artifacts development. (U.S. Navy photo by Gerard Sekerak)
