Wessex Archaeology Conservator Thomas Wicks measures the bell from USS Jacob Jones (DD 61) on Feb. 22, 2024, in Wessex Archaeology’s facility in Bluestone Centre, Solstice Park, Amesbury, Salisbury, United Kingdom. The Jacob Jones shipwreck was discovered off the Isles of Scilly, England, in Aug. 2022 by technical divers. Since the discovery, multi-lateral efforts involving UK Ministry of Defence’s Salvage and Marine Operations (MoD SALMO), the UK’s National Oceanography Centre, Wessex Archaeology, and Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) aim to fully document and study the wreck site in support of its interpretation and long-term preservation. The bell – recovered in January by the UK MoD SALMO team with support from NHHC – was initially stabilized by Wessex Archaeology. Image courtesy of Wessex Archaeology.
