This handwritten message from President John Adams, written on July 2, 1798, served to nominate a then-retired George Washington (without his knowledge) to the position of "Lieutenant General and Commander in Chief of all the Armies raised or to be raised in the United States." Held by the US National Archives as part of Records of the U.S. Senate, it comes from a collection of presidential signatures compiled by former Secretary of the Senate Anson G. McKook.
