Maj. Gen. Joseph DiNonno, Commanding General, 29th Infantry Division and 29th Infantry Division Soldiers honor ‘The Bedford Boys’, June 7, 2024, at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France with a formation and a speech by DiNonno.
On the morning of June 6, 1944, 44 soldiers, sailors, and airmen from the small town of Bedford, Virginia, population 3,200, stood by to participate in the initial assault on Normandy. Thirty-seven of these young men belonged to Alpha Company, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division. Within minutes of landing on Omaha beach, 19 of Bedford's residents were killed by enemy fire.
In Coleville-sur-Mer, France - Eight of the famed Bedford Boys are buried at the Normandy American Cemetery. The names of two more are engraved there, among the names of men who were never found.
