French President Emmanuel Macron awards World War II veteran Richard “Dick” Rung with the Legion of Honor during the international commemorative ceremony at Omaha Beach marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Allied landings in Normandy, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, France, June 6, 2024. Assigned to the U.S. Navy’s LCT 539, Rung was sent overseas and took part in the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944. After they landed and disembarked the troops, time was spent hosing down the deck of the blood of those who were killed.
