Herschel the Wolverine, the enduring symbol of the 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, sits atop his peak on the day of his unit’s inactivation at Memorial Park, on Fort Drum, New York, June 7, 2024. Herschel the Wolverine is named after Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Herschel F. Briles, who on Nov. 20, 1944, selflessly left the cover and safety of his armored vehicle and ran across a field raked by artillery and small arms fire to rescue his Soldiers while also terminating large amounts of enemy forces singlehandedly. Herschel the Wolverine serves as the embodiment of the “Ready Now” mentality the squadron lived and breathed throughout the duration of the 10th Mountain Division’s lineage, just as his namesake did.
