JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (June 13, 2024) – Lt. Cmdr. William Arden (Dental Corps), head of the Biomaterials Department, Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio’s Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine Directorate, was presented the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal by Capt. Ewell Hollis (Medical Corps), NAMRU San Antonio executive officer, at the Tri-Service Research Laboratory. Arden, of Thornwell, La., was recognized for his meritorious service as the head of the Biomaterial Department from August 2021 to June 2024. He led a team overseeing $3.9 million in competitive grants and $1.9 million in equipment. Additionally, he provided clinical and research staffing for the Endodontics Residency Program, Air Force Postgraduate Dental School, and Mentored Navy Research Enterprise Internship Program along with executing more than 160 hours as the command’s legal officer. NAMRU San Antonio’s mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
It is one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy under the DoD and is one of eight subordinate research commands in the global network of laboratories operating under the Naval Medical Research Command in Silver Spring, Md.
