Caption: This thermal hand manikin assembly with moveable fingers was used by the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, Massachusetts, to evaluate the insulating properties of military field gloves. It has an electroplated copper shell and internal electrical circuits that uniformly heat the shell. This allowed researchers to study heat loss through gloves under a variety of simulated conditions. The device was manufactured by Measurement Technology Northwest, Inc. of Seattle, Washington circa 1975. [NMHM 2016.0005.1] (Disclosure: This image has been cropped to emphasize the subject.)
