U.S. Marines Corps Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Gary, center, and Sgt. Joshua Wittwer, both explosive ordnance technicians from Combat Logistics Battalion 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, seal a chemical munition during a chemical response element exercise, on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, June 21, 2024. CREEX simulates the deployment of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense specialists to coordinate with EOD technicians from CLB-31 and a ground support team from Battalion Landing Team 1/4, both with the 31st MEU, to conduct reconnaissance, site exploitation, control contamination, and provide technical decontamination. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force, ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premiere crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
