Patients participate in group cognitive rehabilitation and community reintegration activities through Pottery on the Wheel at Eglin Air Force Base. This activity provides an opportunity for patients to engage in the 4-pillar approach to wellness: mental, physical, social, and spiritual.
• Mental: following multi-step directions.
• Physical/Mental (Cognitive Loading): manipulating tools while sequencing the required steps to produce a desired ceramic piece.
• Mental/Processing Speed: Engaging in complex attention while keeping up with the instructor and fellow participants.
• Social/Spiritual: Interacting within the group to improve communication skills, this relaxing activity can counterbalance the stress response by slowing the breathing rate, relaxing muscles, and reducing blood pressure.
