American and Chadian military emergency departments work together during medical exercise

U.S. Army Maj. Brett Sweeney, an emergency physician (62A) assigned to the 947 Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachment (FRSD), right, discusses the utility of using a nerve block instead of putting local anesthetic into a lip laceration during the Medical Readiness Exercise (MEDREX) in N'Djamena, Chad, June 21, 2024. That approach allows for a better cosmetic closure of the laceration. A procedure not commonly used in that facilities's emergency department. During the exercise Maj. Sweeney is forward with the 402 FRSD. MEDREX is a medical readiness exercise program, planned and executed by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), that allow military health professionals from the U.S. and their African partners to exchange medical practices, procedures and techniques that build and strengthen treatment capabilities, resulting in lasting relationships between the partners.
