    USS Essex (LHD 2)

    Capt. Wayne P. Liebold, commanding officer of amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), presents a gift to Cmdr. Tyson Bergmann, commanding officer of Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Vancouver (FFH 331) while it is docked at Naval Base San Diego for a port visit prior to participating in (RIMPAC) 2024, Jun. 13, 2024. Twenty-nine nations, 40 surface ships, four submarines, 14 national land forces, more than 171 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are set to participate in RIMPAC in and around the Hawaiian Islands, June 27 to Aug. 1. The world’s largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world’s oceans. RIMPAC 2024 is the 29th exercise in the series that began in 1971. Essex is homeported in San Diego, conducting a maintenance period to upgrade and refurbish many key systems aboard.
