Sgt. Matthew Armendariz, assigned to 415 Chemical Brigade, 76th Operational Response Command, competed in the Expert Soldier Badge (ESB) Fitness Test during the first day of the "2024 Division Best Squad Competition" (BSC) on March 7, 2024, at Camp Parks, Calif. The ESB includes a circuit of push-ups, a low crawl, a two-mile run, and carrying two water cans of 5 gallons each.
During BSC, squads complete a fitness assessment, mounted and dismounted patrols, individual and collective fire, weapons proficiency, hands-on squad tasks, day/night land navigation, a written exam, an essay, and mystery events designed to test the squad's strength and problem-solving skills. The event culminates with a board interview with sergeants major from across the Army Reserve.
The 76th Operational Response Command (ORC) is the Army Reserve's Center for Defense Support of Civilian Authorities, providing support to state and local officials, first responders, and other federal agencies during emergencies or natural disasters. The 76th ORC is home to two Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) brigades, a space brigade, A Regional Support Group, The Army Reserve's Consequence Management Unit, 11 Army Reserve Elements, 10 Regional Emergency Preparedness Liaison Office (EPLO) Teams, and 53 State EPLO Teams.
