Callao, Peru (July 08, 2024) Lt. Megan Schilling and Dr. Claudia Guezala, with U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) SOUTH’s Virology Research and Development Department, describe recent accomplishments and ongoing research goals to Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath, U.S. Ambassador to Peru, and Rear Adm. Oscar Oliva Angulo, director of Peruvian Navy Health. Syptak-Ramnath and Oliva visited NAMRU SOUTH to learn about the command’s capabilities and ongoing research efforts between the U.S. and Peru. Part of the Navy Medicine Research & Development enterprise, NAMRU SOUTH conducts research on a wide range of infectious diseases of military and public health significance and supports Global Health Engagement through surveillance of those diseases, including dengue fever, malaria, diarrheal diseases and antimicrobial-resistant infections.
