Marialuz Roberto, a Phlebotomist from Balboa Hospital, prepares to draw a blood donation from a Sailor onboard amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), June 20, 2024. Essex Medical department worked in partnership with the Armed Services Blood Program in obtaining 65 units of donated blood from Essex Sailors, which is substantially more than the approximately 20 units that is typically received during a blood drive. The blood is used worldwide for our armed forces and one donation can save as many as three lives. Essex is homeported in San Diego, conducting a maintenance period to upgrade and refurbish many key systems aboard. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Richard E. Anglin)
