    Asan Landing Memorial Ceremony

A Guam performer with the Tatuha Fire Cultural Dancers performed the Bendision during the Asan Landing Memorial Ceremony at Asan Beach, July 15, 2024. The Bendision is a traditional CHamoru blessing to invite positive energy and blessings for the people of Guam. Military service members, local government officials and residents gathered to recall the U.S. military’s liberation of Guam during WWII. The site of the ceremony is where the 3rd Marine Division planted the U.S. flag after securing the beachhead. Approximately 55,000 Marines and Army soldiers participated in the battle for Guam. More than 1,800 American service members were killed in action or died of wounds during the first 21 days of combat. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Rey Moreno Marilao)
