Taiesha Thompson, a Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS) instructor from the Air Defense Artillery School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, instructs U.S. Army personnel during a MANPADS course offered by the Combined Arms Training Center in Vilseck, Germany, July 17, 2024. MANPADS are important because they provide ground troops with a cost-effective, mobile, and flexible means to defend against low-flying aircraft, enhancing overall air defense and force protection. CATC coordinates or delivers individual training and professional education for U.S. Army Soldiers, the Department of the Army and host nation civilians, and multinational partners in classes ranging from MANPADS to Air Assault, Small Arms Maintenance, Medical, and hazardous materials driver.
