Gold Star family members of SPC Ashley Sietsema and family member of PFC Omar E. Torres passing under the Lake Shore Drive bridge during the July 20 Chicago Fire Boat Architectural Tour on Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Sietsema of Melrose Park, Ill. was assigned to 708th Medical Co., and died in a motor vehicle accident on Nov. 12, 2007, in Kuwait City, Kuwait. Torres of Chicago, Ill. was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas and died Aug. 22, 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit during combat operations. The boat tour was led by Maj. Gen. Rodney Boyd, the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard, and organized by the U.S. Army's Survivor Outreach Services and the Illinois National Guard for the 34 Illinois National Guard Gold Star Families whose service members were killed overseas since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. This year, the tour was opened to Gold Star families whose family members served on active duty or in the Reserves. The tour gave the Gold Star Families time to connect with one other and with the leadership of the Illinois National Guard.
