Three Avenger crew members, Army Staff Sgt. Tyler Newkirk (left), team noncommissioned officer in charge, Army Sgt. Gabriella Smith (center), team chief, and Spc. Jack Obando (right), gunner, set up a remote control unit for missile firing capability during an emplacement drill at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, July 23, 2024. The AN/TWQ-1 Avenger air defense system is a surface-to-air missile system that provides mobile, short-range air defense protection for ground units against aerial threats. These Soldiers are members of 3rd Battalion, 265th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, and three of almost 5,000 Florida Guard members mobilized to Camp Shelby to support the Exportable Combat Training Capability exercise, a major training event that ensures the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s readiness and proficiency to deploy.
