Lieutenant General Karsten "Hazel" Heckl leads the Combat Development and Integration and Marine Corps Warfighting Lab Marines and sailors on a farewell run, Aug. 8, 2024, aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. Karsten handed over the reins of Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Aug. 9, 2024, to Lt. Gen. Eric "Smash" Austin and will retire Aug. 16, 2024, after 37 years of honorable and faithful service to the Marine Corps and the United States. Heckl has held both Deputy Commandant, Combat Development and Integration and commanding general of MCCDC, since October 2021. Heckl took his position as the Marine Corps’ top requirements officer when Force Design was primarily conceptual. During his tenure, he was a driving force behind the implementation of Force Design across the Marine Corps, guiding the Service through often tough transitions and structure changes. Collaborating with the Department of the Navy and industry, he has led the charge in the development of amphibious warfare ship requirements and advocated for littoral maneuver options for the Marine Corps’ stand-in forces.
