U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Adrian Mercado Argont, air transportation journeyman with the 156th Contingency Response Squadron, Puerto Rico Air National Guard, refuels a KC-135 Stratotanker using augmented reality technology during Exercise Northern Strike 24-2 in Oscoda, Michigan, Aug. 8, 2024. The augmented reality technology is being developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory. A multi-step process is used to take someone untrained in a task, like aircraft refueling, and in 45 minutes make them capable of completing the task in real life. First, Airmen familiarize themselves with the academic knowledge on a tablet. Then they use a virtual reality simulator to understand the whole process and complete training modules. Finally, Airmen use an augmented reality headset while completing the real world task. The headset projects prompts, highlighting each step in the process. The technology is aimed for use in Agile Combat Employment where there will be a limited number of personnel available. This will allow smaller teams of highly mobile Airmen to perform critical functions while geographically separated from subject matter experts. While still in the development phase, exercises like Northern Strike allow for feedback from the user end to the developers. (Air National Guard photo by Master Sgt. Tim Chacon)
