    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Deven Pizano (right), a native of Arizona and a low altitude air defense section leader and Cpl. Floyd Botts, a native of Oklahoma and a low altitude air defense gunner, both with 3rd LAAD, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, observe a CH-53E Super Stallion land during a forward arming and refueling point exercise at Ie Shima, Japan, Aug. 21, 2024. To ensure smooth operations the FARP is defended by two sets of resilient forces; the ground combat element and the low air combat element these offer a deterrence against potential adversaries in a full 360-degree radius by utilizing integrated effects and layered defenses. USINDOPACOM forces perform operations in and around critical sea passages and trade thoroughfares to deter threats that create regional instability and impinge on the free flow of goods, people, and ideas.
