USS Guardian (MCM 5) sits aground on Tubbataha Reef. Since the Jan. 17 grounding, the U.S. Navy has worked in close cooperation with Philippine authorities to minimize environmental effects. Led by U.S. Navy Supervisor of Salvage Capt. Mark Matthews, an experienced team of salvage professionals will dismantle the 23-year-old Guardian and safely remove the ship from the reef. With the deteriorating integrity of the ship, the weight involved, and where it has grounded on the reef, the dismantling is expected to take more than one month as the U.S. Navy works to conduct this complex operation as quickly as safety, weather, and environmental protection allows.
