USS Cole Survivor Teaches Warrior Toughness to CLDJ

Camp Lemonnier Sailors attended a Q&A session on warrior toughness with Master Chief Information System Technician Amaury Ponciano, who survived an attack on USS Cole (DDG 67) nearly 24 years ago.

On Oct. 12, 2000, Cole was refueling in the Port of Aden when terrorists attacked the ship, killing 17 Sailors and injuring 39. The ship -- and Ponciano --returned to the fleet to continue serving, embodying the warrior toughness mindset that drives Navy mission readiness.

Ponciano now serves as the senior enlisted leader for U.S. Fleet Cyber Command's communications, networks and information systems directorate.

Camp Lemonnier is an operational installation that enables U.S., allied and partner nation forces to be where they are needed to ensure security and protect U.S. interests. The installation provides world-class support for service members, transient U.S. assets and 36 local tenant commands. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Patricia Elkins)
