The tribute is produced by the Municipal Art Society of New York. Since the first display in 2002 the tribute has become an annual event commemorating the 911 attacks each September.
Sanchez was with a group of Iowa Air National Guard members from the 185th Fighter Wing on temporary duty assigned combat air patrol mission who were flying missions over New York City in March 2002.
