Construction partners working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, augment the underwater barrier sill in the Mississippi River Sept. 26, 2023, as part of their efforts to help arrest saltwater progression upriver during the 2023 low-water event. For their work on this effort, team members from the USACE New Orleans District received a USACE 2024 Innovation of the Year Award for developing the notched underwater sill barrier, which not only helped arrest saltwater progression during the 2023 low-water season, but also provided a channel for use by the navigation industry to ensure deep-draft shipping continued along the nation’s busiest inland waterway.
