U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Christopher LaNeve, Eighth Army commanding general, joined Republic of Korea military leaders and dignitaries in Seoul, South Korea to commemorate the 74th anniversary of Gen. Walton Walker's victory in the Battle of Pusan Perimeter, Sept. 24, 2024. A ceremony was held at the Gen. Walker memorial outside the Walkerhill Hotel where LaNeve provided remarks honoring Walker's legacy and the Republic of Korea-U.S. alliance that continues to this day.
Gen. Walton Walker was the Eighth Army commanding general at the start of the Korean War. The Battle of the Pusan Perimeter, was a large-scale battle between United Nations Command and North Korean forces lasting from Aug. 4 to Sept. 18, 1950. It was one of the first major engagements of the Korean War. An army of 140,000 UN troops, having been pushed south to the brink of defeat, were rallied to make a final stand against the invading Korean People's Army, 98,000 men strong.
