Bob Stacey holds his son’s Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device for valor that he received posthumously during a ceremony at the 5th Marine Regiment parade field here Feb. 15, 2013. Sergeant William Stacey, a squad leader who served with 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, was awarded this medal for his many acts of perseverance and courage during his deployment to Afghanistan. Mentioned specifically in his award citation was a combat engagement in November 2011 during which Sgt. Stacey personally moved 200 meters over exposed ground and heavy machine gun fire to tactically advantageous terrain where his squad could achieve fire superiority. Even though they were drastically outnumbered, Sgt. Stacey’s Marines held their ground under intense fire, beating back numerous flanking attempts throughout a fight that lasted for several hours.
