U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Gen. Eric Austin, Deputy Commandant, Combat Development and Integration, at the General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk shipyard, Norfolk, Virginia, October 4, 2024. Austin engaged with the ship's crew and leadership to discuss embarked Marine Expeditionary Units (MEU) landing force’s critical requirement for the ship’s versatility, readiness, and combat capability. LPD-24 and amphibious warships of its class provide the Navy and Marine Corps team with modern, networked, and survivable sea-bases that operate with 21st century transformational landing craft required to deliver landing forces ashore and conduct expeditionary warfare missions.
