Maj. Gen. Mark Quander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Great Lakes and Ohio River Division commander and leader of the USACE Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, receives a briefing from Col. Cullen Jones, USACE New Orleans District commander, Oct. 12, 2024, at the Metropolitan Sewerage District Maintenance Facility in Asheville, North Carolina, about the efforts the New Orleans team is taking in support of USACE Hurricane Helene Task Force Water. Currently, the team from New Orleans has been performing site visits to various areas around Asheville to survey for places where temporary water treatment units could be set up to help the city and local government agencies supply hospitals, emergency response facilities and schools with potable water. Close to 300 USACE personnel from various districts have been working alongside local, state and federal partners in areas affected by Hurricane Helene to provide advice and assistance when requested on water treatment and distribution, power restoration, debris removal, and infrastructure repair and support.
