    I Marine Expeditionary Force

U.S. Navy Capt. Henry F. Holcombe Jr., the I Marine Expeditionary Force chaplain and eldest sailor in attendance, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Crystal Saldivar, the youngest sailor in attendance, share the first piece of cake during a ceremony in honor of the Navy’s 249th birthday at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Oct. 15, 2024. The cake cutting ceremony symbolizes the passing of history and tradition from one generation to the next. The Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, established by the Continental Congress on Oct. 13, 1775. In 1972, Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt, chief of naval operations, authorized recognition of that day as the Navy's birthday. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Jordan Searls)
