7th Special Forces Division Sgt. Maj. Mike Clayton places his Green Beret on the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy in Section 45 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, Oct. 17, 2024. This 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) Wreath-Laying Ceremony is held yearly to commemorate President Kennedy’s contributions to the U.S. Army Special Forces, including authorizing the “Green Beret” as the official headgear for all U.S. Army Special Forces and his uncompromising support to the regiment. The placing of the Green Beret on President Kennedy’s gravesite is done in commemoration of Command Sgt. Maj. Francis Ruddy who, while designated to guard President Kennedy’s gravesite in 1963, laid his own beret upon the gravesite of his then Commander-in-Chief.
