Smith, a soldier in the 92nd Engineer Battalion “Black Diamonds,” attached to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, spends a few more precious moments with loved ones late-night early February. Their time together is precious because the battalion is deploying this night to Afghanistan for nine months in order to help the drawdown of U.S. forces in Afghanistan by reducing the Army’s structural footprint there.
