Vietnam prisoner of war Cmdr. Everett Alvarez Jr and his wife Tomasine address the reception event following the announcement ceremony for the location of the new National Museum of the United States Navy (NMUSN) on Oct. 18, 2024. At the reception, a bust of Alvarez was unveiled to highlight his dedication to service and remembrance of Alvarez becoming the first American aviator shot down over North Vietnam. He was captured and held for eight and a half years as a prisoner of war, returning home in 1973. (U.S. Navy photo by Clifford L. H. Davis)
