DUBLIN, Va. - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Planning and Response Team members supervise contractors at Claytor Lake as crews position a newly-arrived 500-ton crane for large-scale debris removal operations. Eight Baltimore District team members are among the specialists deployed to support the debris mission, with an additional eight district personnel assisting various other hurricane recovery efforts throughout the affected regions. The site, designated as a Temporary Debris Management Area, is part of USACE's extensive response to Hurricane Helene, which currently involves 212 deployed USACE personnel, 89 support staff providing reach-back assistance, and 109 contracted workers. The operation represents one of 33 active FEMA Mission Assignments, part of a broader $338.14 million federal response effort that includes emergency power restoration, infrastructure assessment, and debris management. At Claytor Lake, recovered materials will be systematically sorted into categories including construction materials, vegetative waste, household items, and hazardous materials. This coordinated effort between federal, state, and local partners includes $4.32 million in Flood Control and Coastal Emergency Funding to provide flood response expertise and resource management. The debris removal mission marks a critical step in restoring Claytor Lake's ecosystem while demonstrating USACE's comprehensive approach to hurricane recovery.
