    U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Scott Carpenter, an F/A-18 Hornet pilot with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 312, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, inspects an F/A-18C Hornet prior to flying during exercise Keen Sword 25 at Japan Air Self-Defense Force Komatsu Air Base, Oct. 29, 2024. VMFA-312 is temporarily augmenting MAG-12, 1st MAW under the Unit Deployment Program, which aims to provide squadrons stationed in the continental United States with experience training in the Indo-Pacific. Keen Sword is a biennial, joint and bilateral field-training exercise involving U.S. military and Japan Self-Defense Force personnel, designed to increase readiness and interoperability while strengthening the ironclad U.S.-Japan alliance.
